9925 East Drive, Morongo Valley, California, USA
HOUSE FOR 5 GUESTS - Set in the wild desert landscape in Morongo Valley, just 30 minutes from Joshua Tree National Park and from Palm Springs, Merchant House High Desert offers a unique retreat shaped by the eye of artist and former stylist Denise Portmans. Created with her daughter, artist Sara Marlowe Hall, the house was conceived as a kind of living gallery, where art, objects and design are part of the experience. Inside, the atmosphere is eclectic and warm bringing together mid-century pieces, their personal collection of art & sculptures, ceramics, vintage rugs and objects gathered from California and their travels. Whitewashed walls, exposed beams and warm, tactile materials create a relaxed backdrop for the evolving collection, balancing character with comfort. The three-bedroom house opens onto the desert and mountain views, with a plunge pool, outdoor bath, shaded dining area and hammocks overlooking the valley. The landscape becomes an extension of the living space, offering quiet corners to soak up the desert light, dine outdoors and gather around the fire pit beneath the stars. A deeply personal desert hideaway where art, design and the landscape come together in a setting made for slowing down and finding inspiration.
